Rolex Serial Number Lookup — Find Your Production Year
Enter your Rolex serial number to estimate its production year. This number — 6 to 8 digits, preceded by a letter after 1987 — is engraved on the side of the case between the lugs, visible once you remove the bracelet.
Note: These dates are approximate (±1–2 years). Since around 2010, Rolex has used random serial numbers, making precise dating impossible.
How to date a Rolex by its serial number
Every Rolex carries a unique serial number assigned when it leaves the factory. By comparing it with the production registers compiled in reference horology books, you can estimate the production year of your Rolex to within one or two years. It’s the first check to make before buying or selling a pre-owned Rolex.
Where to find your Rolex serial number
On the side of the case, between the lugs at 6 o’clock: you must remove the bracelet to read it. Since around 2005, Rolex has also engraved the number on the inner rehaut (dial flange), visible through the crystal at 6 o’clock. Don’t confuse it with the model reference, engraved between the lugs at 12 o’clock — for that one, use our Rolex reference decoder.
Frequently asked questions
Why can’t my recent Rolex be dated?
Since 2010–2011, Rolex has used random 8-character serial numbers, specifically to prevent dating. Only the warranty card or an archive extract can then reveal the exact year.
Does the serial number prove authenticity?
No. A consistent number is a good sign, but counterfeits copy existing numbers. Only a full expert authentication (movement, engravings, finishing) can authenticate a watch — that’s our craft at Heure Miroir.
The estimated date doesn’t match my papers — is that normal?
Yes, a gap of 1 to 2 years is common: cases are produced, then stored before assembly and sale. The date on the papers reflects the original sale, not when the case was made.
What is my vintage Rolex worth?
The production year strongly affects its value.
